Material and workmanship

The paperwork that came with your roof

The folder has two documents in it, and only one of them comes from our roofers. Which one you need depends on what's wrong up there, so one of our roofers goes up and walks you through it first. Whatever comes back is yours to sit with.

Most roofs on your street went on within a few years of each other, so most folders in Melissa read about the same. What changes is the workmanship half, and that half is ours.

Which warranty answers for what on your roof

Two different parties wrote the two documents in that folder, and the material half turns on which shingles are up there. Neither one was written with Collin County hail in mind.

What a Melissa roof warranty does not cover

Each document covers one thing well and says nothing about the rest. What the manufacturer answers for tracks the materials that went on. Most of these roofs are young enough that the gaps come up more often than the coverage does.

  • Hail, wind and storm damage: acts of nature are excluded from both documents, and that work runs through storm damage repair instead.
  • A second layer of shingles: laying new shingles over old ones shortens or ends the manufacturer's coverage, and it hides any rot in the deck underneath.
  • An attic with nowhere to vent: heat trapped underneath cooks shingles early, and most manufacturers treat poor ventilation as grounds for denial.
  • Work by somebody else: a satellite mount, a solar array or another crew's repair can end coverage on the area around it.
  • Age and ordinary wear: a roof reaching the end of its run is a maintenance matter, and neither document treats it as a defect.
  • An install that missed the spec: material coverage assumes the roof went on the manufacturer's way, so a bad install can take both sides down at once.

Most denials trace back to how the roof went on and how the attic breathes. Our roofers photograph what they find up there, and those photographs come to you. They are also what a hail insurance claim runs on.

Questions

Warranty questions Melissa owners settle early

Q1How long should the workmanship term run?
Lengths vary between roofers and there is no single right number. What matters more is that the term is written, that it names what it covers, and that you know who to call if something fails in year three.
Q2Does hail damage void the warranty?
Hail is not usually a warranty matter at all. Storm damage goes to the insurer, and the warranty covers defects and installation. On a hail market like this one, that distinction decides which document you should be reaching for.
Q3Is a transferable warranty worth paying for?
A transferable term can be worth it, if you may sell within its span. Transferability is a clause in the manufacturer document, not a separate product, so the honest way to weigh it is to read what transfers and what conditions apply.
Coverage questions

Ask a Melissa roofer what the warranty covers

Have the paperwork handy if you can find it. Sometimes a roofer gets up there and finds nothing that needs doing yet, and Melissa Roofing Co will tell you exactly that. Whatever comes back, you can think it over as long as you like.
